George V Silver Mounted Tidy Pot, B'ham, 1923
This is an attractive George V Cut Glass Dressing Table Tidy Pot with a Sterling Silver lid. The body of the circular jar is elegantly decorated with star, pinwheel and dogtooth designs and the underside of the base is star cut. The stepped lid has a central hole and is gilded on the interior. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
These pots were originally intended as hair tidy pots but today are mostly used for the likes of cotton wool, cotton buds, hair pins and other bits and pieces.
The pot was made in Birmingham by Samuel M. Levi and dates to 1923. Founded by Samuel Levi in the 1880s, the firm operated from premises in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter primarily producing silverware for personal use such as cigarette cases, perfume bottles, powder compacts, vesta cases, buckles, photo frames and card cases, although they did also produce some tableware. After Samuel’s death the firm became S.M. Levi Ltd in 1931 and ceased trading at the start of the Second World War.
Condition is good, with no chips or cracks in the glass and just a few little dings in the silver lid. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tidy pot is 6.3cm / 2.5ins in diameter and stands 5.5cm / 2.2ins high. The lid by itself weighs in at 7.6g / 0.27oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 143.3g / 5oz.
The hallmarks on the side rim of the lid are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter y for 1923 and the S.M.L makers' mark for Samuel M. Levi.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
