George IV Rouge Pot, J & A Douglas, 1821 George IV Georgian 1820s %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a charming George IV Cut Glass Rouge Pot with a Sterling Silver lid. The circular pot has vertical line cut decoration around the body and a star cut base. The lid has a band of engine turned decoration surrounding a blank cartouche.

The pot was made in London by silversmiths John & Archibald Douglas and dates to 1821. The Douglas brothers were active in London during the early years of the 19th century, registering their first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in 1821. They specialised in vanity cases and their contents for both ladies and gentlemen.

Condition is good with just a couple of little nibbles to the bottom rim of the glass pot plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 205 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The rouge pot is 3.3cm / 1.3ins high and 3.8cm / 1.5ins in diameter. The lid by itself weighs in at 11.2g / 0.39oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the pot weighs 66.1g / 2.3oz.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the lid, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter f for 1821, the George III duty mark (the George IV duty mark was introduced later that year) and the I.D over A.D makers' mark for John & Archibald Douglas.
