This is an attractive and unusual Victorian Glass Scent Pot with a Sterling Silver Collar. The cylindrical pot has a bark effect finish all around the body and a star cut base. The silver collar is plain and holds a broad glass stopper with a trapezoidal handle.

The scent pot was made in Birmingham by C.C. May & Son and dates to 1894. Charles May founded his firm in Shoreditch in London in 1838. By 1881 they had moved to Hackney and become C.C. May & Son. The company specialised in silver mounted glass, particularly dressing table and grooming items and match strikes, and also in silver thimbles, which they produced in considerable quantity. They registered marks in both London and Birmingham. The firm ceased trading in the early 1920s.

Condition is good, with no chips or cracks in the glass pot, a few little dings in the silver collar and a small nibble out of the top of the glass stopper. It remains pefectly usable. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pot stands 7.5cm / 2.9ins high and is 5.4cm / 2.1ins in diameter. It weighs 208.7g / 7.3oz.

The hallmarks on the silver collar are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter u for 1894 and the C M makers' mark for C.C. May & Son.
