19th C. Dutch Silver Box, Sheffield Import, 1890

Here we have an ornate late 19th Century Dutch Sterling Silver Box with a Gilt Interior. The box is oblong with rounded ends and has a hinged lid. It is decorated all over the body and lid in typically Dutch style with a variety of rural scenes. The underside of the base is beautifully decorated with a classical scene. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The box was made in Amsterdam in 1890, imported into the UK by Samuel Boaz Landeck and assayed in Sheffield in 1895. Samuel Boaz Landeck, sometimes Anglicised as Boyce Landeck, was an importer based in London. He registered his mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in 1879 and remained in business until his death in 1907. He specialised in sourcing personal items and tableware in continental designs that weren’t otherwise available in the UK.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 130 years of use. The hinge is in full working order and the lid shuts securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box is 11.3cm / 4.4ins long, 4.2cm / 1.6ins wide and 2.5cm / 0.98ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 80.4g / 2.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The British hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the letter F to show that it is of foreign origin, the date letter c for 1895 and the S.B.L importers' mark for Samuel Boaz Landeck. There are several Dutch hallmarks on the inside rim including the Amsterdam coat of arms, a 930 stamp for 930/1000 grade silver, the date letter F for 1890 and a makers' mark that we have not yet been able to identify.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the box.
