Edwardian Dressing Table Box, Birmingham, 1903

This is an attractive, large Edwardian Cut Glass and Sterling Silver Dressing Table Box. The box is bombe shaped with a hobnail cut body and a star cut base. The silver lid has a gadrooned rim and is embossed with scrolls, flowers and foliage around a blank central cartouche.
The dressing table box was made in Birmingham by Martin, Hall & Co and dates to 1903. The firm was founded by Richard Martin and brothers Ebenezer & Joshua Hall in 1854 as the successor to Roberts & Hall, in which Ebenezer had been a partner. The company manufactured in Sheffield and Birmingham and had showrooms in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sydney, Australia. They participated in many international exhibitions and won a number of awards. The firm went into decline with the economic downturn of the 1930s and had ceased trading by 1936.
Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box is 12.7cm / 5ins long, 6cm / 2.4ins wide and stands 4.4cm / 1.7ins high. The lid by itself weighs in at a respectable 32.8g / 1.1oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in the box weighs 267.4g / 9.4oz.
The hallmarks, on the upper side of the lid below the cartouche, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter d for 1903 and the R M over E H makers' mark for Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall of Martin, Hall & Co.
