George V Cut Glass Salt with Silver Rim, 1919
This is a stylish George V Cut Glass Open Salt with a Sterling Silver top rim. The salt is circular with a flat base and half moon cuts around the body. The silver rim is plain and there are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The salt was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Levi & Salaman and dates to 1919. Founded by Phineas Levi and Joseph Salaman in 1870, Levi & Salaman quickly established a reputation for high quality silverware and remained in business for fifty years until they were merged into Barker Brothers in 1921, with the brand name continuing on through the twenties.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, just one truly tiny ding in the silver rim and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 105 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt is 5cm / 1.97ins in diameter and stands 3cm / 1.18ins high. It weighs 41.4g / 1.46oz.
The hallmarks on the rim are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter u for 1919 and the L & S makers' mark for Levi & Salaman.
