George V Silver Mustard Pot, Edw. Barnard, 1913
This is a good quality George V Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with its original Blue Glass liner. The mustard pot is oval with a solid flat base, a stepped upper rim and hinged lid with an urn finial. The inside of the lid is gilded and the side of the body is engraved with a crest of an arm holding a sword rising from a crown.
The mustard pot was made in London by the renowned silversmiths Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd and dates to 1913. Edward Barnard & Sons has a history that dates back to 1680 when the firm was established by Anthony Nelme. Through partnerships the Barnard family became involved in the silversmiths in 1773 and took control in 1829, renaming the firm Edward Barnard & Sons. Their most celebrated creation is the stunning silver gilt Lily Font from 1840, which forms part of the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London and has been used for Royal christenings ever since it was commissioned by Queen Victoria & Prince Albert.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents in the silver, one little nibble in the rim of the glass liner and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot measures 7.5cm / 2.9ins from front to handle, 3.7cm / 1.4ins across the body and stands 6cm / 2.4ins high. Without the glass liner it weighs in at a very respectable 65.7g / 2.3oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 104.4g / 3.7oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the body, are a little rubbed but still okay to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter s for 1913 and the distinctive E B & S Ld makers' mark for Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd. The underside of the base has the retail stamp for E. Johnson Ltd of Dublin.
