Edwardian Silver Heart Trinket Dish, B'ham, 1904
This is a charming Edwardian Sterling Silver Heart Shaped Trinket Dish. The dish has a plain heart shaped base and raised pierced sides with a basket weave pattern and embossed ribbon and flower decoration. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The trinket dish is made in Birmingham by silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1904. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.
Condition is very good with just a few very tiny dings in the base, which are almost inevitable when it is being used for putting antique jewellery in overnight, plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dish is 9cm / 3.5ins from top to bottom, 8cm / 3.1ins across and 1.9cm / 0.75ins high. It weighs in at 18.4g / 0.65oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the rim at the top of the heart, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter e for 1904 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
