Edwardian Silver Pierced Bowl, Mappin & Webb, 1908
Here we have an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Pierced Bowl. The bowl is shaped like a quaich with a circular base and two flat handles, which are decorated with a fleur-de-lys. The sides of the bowl are pierced into four tiers consisting of a long arch, a straight bar, a circle and a short arch at the top. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The bowl was made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1908. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 115 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl measures 16.8cm / 6.6ins from handle to handle, 13.1cm / 5.1ins across and stands 3.4cm / 1.3ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 97.7g / 3.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter II for 1908 and the Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. In addition there is a registered design number of 524645, which dates the original design also to 1908, and the Mappin & Webb Ltd retail stamp.
Shipping in the UK is £11.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bowl.
