2 x Victorian Shell Dishes, London Import, 1893
Here we have an elegant Pair of Late Victorian Sterling Silver Shell Dishes in a heavy gauge of silver. The dishes are shaped as scallop shells and stand on three ball feet. The interiors are beautifully moulded in a design featuring scrolls and flowers.
These dishes are very versatile. They can be used on the dining table for butter or condiments or would work well for nuts and snacks. Alternatively they make beautiful trinket dishes for jewellery and accessories on a dressing table or for small items of stationery on a desk.
The dishes were imported into Britain by David Bridge and assayed in London in 1893. David Bridge was a London based importer and wholesaler of continental silver items active in the 1880s and 1890s. His mark is seen on a variety of silverware including boxes, flatware and tableware in designs that were markedly different to those being produced in Britain at the time.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of little dings to the ball feet plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each dish is 8.7cm / 3.4ins in diameter and stands 2.8cm / 1.1ins high. The pair together weigh in at a substantial 118.9g / 4.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper sides of the dishes, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the letter F for foreign to show that they are imports, the date letter S for 1893 and the D B importers' mark for David Bridge. There are no silver marks from the country of origin as far as we can see.
Shipping in the UK is £11.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the dishes.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
