Victorian Silver Bachelor Teapot, Sheffield, 1898
This is a smart late Victorian Sterling Silver Bachelor Teapot in the revived Regency style. The oval teapot has a part reeded body and spout, a reeded dome on the lid and an ebonised handle and finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The teapot is made in Sheffield by silversmiths Hammond, Creake & Co and dates to 1898. The firm was founded by Saint Arnaud Creake in the late 1880s and registered their first silver mark in 1892. Hammond was added to the company name in 1895 but seems to have been the archetypal silent partner as there is no information about him or her at all. Creake died in 1928 and the firm ceased trading in the 1930s.
Whilst the teapot has had some use, as you would expect, it remains in good, sound, usable condition. There are a couple of small dings to the body and a little bit of give in the handle but nothing of concern. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teapot measures 20.5cm / 8.1ins from spout to handle, 8cm / 3.1ins across and stands 11.7cm / 4.6ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 282.6g / 9.9oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the body, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter f for 1898 and the S A C in a trefoil makers' mark for Saint Arnaud Creake of Hammond, Creake & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the teapot.
