Edwardian Silver Tea Strainer, Chester, 1909
This is an attractive and practical Edwardian Sterling Silver Tea Strainer. The circular strainer has a pierced bowl and a short handle to fit neatly above your teacup whilst the tea is poured. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The tea strainer was made by silversmiths Stokes & Ireland Ltd and assayed in Chester in 1909. The firm was established in Birmingham by William Henry Stokes & Arthur George Ireland in 1891 and operated from premises in Great Hampton Street in the famous Jewellery Quarter. Although Birmingham based, the majority of their pieces were assayed in Chester with only a few marked in their home town of Birmingham. They produced a very broad range of consistently good quality silverware and remained in business until the late 1930s.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 115 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tea strainer is 9.4cm / 3.7ins from handle to rim, 7.5cm / 2.9ins across and 1.5cm / 0.59ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 36.9g / 1.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the handle, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter I for 1909 and the S.I.Ld makers' mark for Stokes & Ireland Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
