Art Deco Silver 3 Pce Tea Set, A.L Davenport, 1932

1 of 6
Here we have a wonderfully elegant Art Deco Sterling Silver Three Piece Tea Set. The style of the set couldn't be more Deco, with circular stepped bases, angular handles and a square upright spout on the teapot complimented by a square pouring lip on the cream jug. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The tea set was made in Birmingham by A.L. Davenport and dates to 1932. This Birmingham firm was founded in the 1920s by James Davenport who used his father's initials for the company name. They produced a wide range of Sterling Silver and electroplate. In 1932 they purchased the long established Birmingham firm T. Wilkinson & Sons and acquired the rights to their Pelican Plate trademark. James was succeeded by his son Eric Davenport and the firm finally ceased trading in 1971.
Condition is good with just a few tiny dings in the body of the teapot plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teapot has a 1 pint / 568ml capacity. It is 21.5cm / 8.5ins from spout to handle, 12.5cm / 4.9ins across the body and stands 14.8cm / 5.8ins high. The sugar bowl is 14cm / 5.5ins from handle to handle, 9.1cm / 3.6ins across and 7.5cm / 2.9ins high. The cream jug is 10.7cm / 4.2ins from lip to handle, 7.5cm / 2.9ins across and 7.8cm / 3ins high. All together, the set weighs in at a very substantial 632g / 22.3oz.
The hallmarks are a little rubbed from many years of cleaning but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter H for 1932 and the A L D makers' mark for A.L. Davenport.
Shipping in the UK is £16.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the weight and the value of the set.
