George V Silver Mounted Oil or Vinegar Bottle 1920
Here we have a charming George V Sterling Silver Mounted Oil or Vinegar Bottle. The hand blown bottle has a circular base, a bulbous body and a small c-shaped handle. This is topped with a silver collar and the lift off silver pouring mechanism.
The bottle was made in Birmingham by John Grinsell & Sons and dates to 1920. Originally established in Birmingham in 1864 as Grinsell & Bourne, John Grinsell left the partnership and set up in business with his four sons in 1871 as John Grinsell & Sons. The new firm was quickly successful and opened showrooms in the City of London and in Glasgow. They specialised in silver mounted glassware and ceramics and remained in business until the 1950s when they were taken over by Barker-Ellis.
Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bottle stands 13cm / 5.1ins high and is 5.7cm / 2.2ins in diameter at its widest point. It weighs in at 146g / 5.15oz.
The matching hallmarks on the collar and the pourer are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter v for 1920 and the J.G & S makers' mark for John Grinsell & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
