Art Deco Egg Cup & Napkin Ring Set, B'ham, 1929
This is a stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Egg Cup and Napkin Ring Set. The egg cup is urn shaped with a circular spreading foot and a band of engine turned decoration around the upper part of the body. The napkin ring is also circular and has matching engine turned decoration all around the body. There are no initials or personalisation on either the egg cup or the napkin ring making these ideal as a gift for a Christening or any other special occasion.
The egg cup and napkin ring were made in Birmingham by Sanders & Mackenzie and date to 1929. Ernest W. Sanders and Henry A. Mackenzie established their firm in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in 1911. They were very successful, producing a broad range of silverware from their premises in Spencer Street, where they remained in business until around 1980.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The egg cup is 5.2cm / 2ins tall and 4.3cm / 1.7ins in diameter. The napkin ring is 4.5cm / 1.8ins in diameter and 2.2cm / 0.87ins deep. The two items together weigh in at a respectable 34.0g / 1.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on both pieces are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter E for 1929 and the S & M makers' mark for Sanders & Mackenzie.
