Art Deco Silver Toast Rack, Frank Cobb, 1935
Here we have a very stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Four Slice Toast Rack. The toast rack has a triangular form with a flattened top and stands on four spreading bracket feet. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The toast rack was made in Sheffield by Frank Cobb & Co and dates to 1935. Frank Cobb founded his company in 1903 moving to the Howard Works in Sheffield a couple of years later. The firm were both silversmiths and electroplaters and quickly became successful. When other firms were struggling in the late 1920s and 1930s, Cobb was prospering and acquired a number of companies and their premises. Frank Cobb died in 1957 but the firm continued to thrive until it finally closed its doors in 1986.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack is 7.8cm / 3.1ins long by 8.2cm / 3.2ins wide and stands 7.8cm / 3.1ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 102.7g / 3.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the side of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter s for 1935 and the F C makers' mark for Frank Cobb & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the toast rack.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
