Edwardian Silver Bonbon Dish, A&J Zimmerman, 1910
This is an attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Bonbon Dish. The dish is oval with a smooth domed base, the sides pierced in a crisscross pattern and a scalloped top rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The term bonbon dish is a generic term applied to small dishes and refers to them being used for wrapped sweets, however these are versatile pieces that have always been used for a variety of purposes such as nuts or snacks, as trinket dishes on dressing antique tables, for small stationery items on desks, for potpourri or simply as decorative items.
The bonbon dish was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths A & J Zimmerman and dates to 1910. The firm was founded by brothers Arthur & John Zimmerman in Birmingham in 1879, operating from premises at Regent Place in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They later opened a second premises and a showroom in London. The firm produced a wide range of silverware of consistently good quality up until they ceased trading around 1930.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the light superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bonbon dish is 13cm / 5.1ins long by 7.8cm / 3.1ins wide and stands 2.5cm / 0.98ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 64.6g / 2.28oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside base of the dish, are nice and clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1910 and the A & J Z makers' mark for A & J Zimmerman. In addition there is a registered design number of 572088, which dates the original design also to 1910.
