Edwardian Sauce Bottle in Silver Sleeve, 1905
Here we have an elegant Edwardian Table Sauce Bottle in a Sterling Silver Sleeve. The bottle has two rounded sides and two flat ones and sits perfectly inside the silver sleeve. The sleeve has embossed swags and harebells around the body below an upper band of ribbon and bow decoration. The stopper is a cork set into a sliver cap.
The sleeve is made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Levi & Salaman and dates to 1905. The firm was founded in 1870 by Phineas Levi and Joseph Salaman. They initially concentrated on antique jewellery but after purchasing the Potosi Silver Co in 1878 they broadened out into many areas of domestic silverware. They remained under the control of the Levi and Salaman families until the firm was bought by Barker Brothers in 1921.
Condition of the sleeve is very good with no dings or dents and there are no chips or cracks in the bottle. The silver cap on the cork has become a little misshapen and has a few dings on the top but remains perfectly functional. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bottle stands 12.4cm / 4.9ins high and is 5.2cm / 2ins in diameter. The sleeve by itself weighs in at 35.3g / 1.2oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in the sauce bottle weighs 230.2g / 8.1oz.
The hallmarks on the side of the sleeve are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter f for 1905 and the L & S makers' mark for Levi & Salaman.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the item.
