Edwardian Silver Mustard Pot, E.S. Barnsley, 1908
This is a smart Edwardian Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with its original Blue Glass Liner. The mustard pot is in an unusual lobed trefoil design standing on three pad feet with a turned finial and an acanthus decorated handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The mustard pot was made in Birmingham by E.S. Barnsley & Co and dates to 1908. Edward Souter Barnsley registered his mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1887. His firm was based in Frederick Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter and made a very wide range of silverware for the table, for domestic and for personal use. The company remained in business into the early 1920s.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. There is some give in the hinge of the lid but it is still working well. There are a couple of nibbles in the rim of the glass liner but it remains perfectly usable. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot measures 7cm / 2.7ins from rim to handle, 5.5cm / 2.2ins across the body and stands 4.5cm / 1.8ins high. Without the glass liner, it weighs in at a respectable 38.1g / 1.3oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 70.1g / 2.5oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the body, are somewhat rubbed biut can still be deciphered. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter II for 1908 and the E.S.B makers' mark for E.S. Barnsley & Co.
