Here we have a good quality pair of George III Sterling Silver Open Table Salts. The salts are cauldron shaped and stand on three hoof feet. The bodies are decorated with repousse flowers, fruit and foliage around blank cartouches and the interiors are gilded. There is a set of initials, probably P N, on the undersides of the salts which have been partially obscured by later floral engraving, probably done in the 19th century.

The salts were made in London in 1770 and have the makers' mark S M, which is currently unidentified. It was most probably recorded in one of the Goldsmiths Hall lost registers from the middle years of the 18th century.

Condition is good, with no dings or dents. There is some wear to the gilding on the insides of the salts, as you would expect after over 250 years of use, and as a result there is some salt marking. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each salt is 6.7cm / 2.6ins in diameter and stands 3.5cm / 1.4ins high. The pair together weigh in at a substantial 114.0g / 4oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bases, are somewhat rubbed but can still be identified. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter P for 1770 and the mysterious S M makers' mark.
