4 x Victorian Silver Salts, Fenton Brothers, 1880
Here we have an attractive set of four Victorian Sterling Silver Open Salts with Gilt interiors. The salts are circular with flat rim bases, reeded decoration on the lower bodies and embossed floral decoration around the uppers. All four salts have blank cartouches.
The salts were made in Sheffield by silversmiths Fenton Brothers and date to 1880. Fenton Brothers have a complex history with many changes of personnel. The firm was established by brothers John Frederick Fenton & Frank Fenton in 1859, principally as electroplaters but by the 1860s they also made Sterling Silver items. By 1888 it was being run by Samuel & Alfred Fenton, sons of John, and by 1891 by Samuel Fenton and William Staniforth. At the start of the 20th century they were almost exclusively producing silver plate and remained in business until the late 1930s when an ill-fated merger resulted in their collapse.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 140 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each salt is 5.4cm / 2.1ins in diameter and stands 2.8cm / 1.1ins high. The set of four together weigh in at a substantial 117.2g / 4.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the side of each salt, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter N for 1880, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J F F over F F makers' mark for John Frederick Fenton and Frank Fenton of Fenton Brothers.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
