4 x Victorian Silver & Gilt Salts, Atkin Bros 1879

Here we have a superb Set of Four Victorian Sterling Silver Open Table Salts with Gilt Interiors. The pedestal salts are oblong with chamfered corners and beaded rims. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The salts were made in Sheffield by Atkin Brothers and date to 1879. The firm traced its roots back to Thomas Law in the mid-18th century, with the Atkin family taking sole control of the business in 1840, first as Henry Atkin & Co and then from 1853 as Atkin Brothers. The firm manufactured both silverware and electroplate in Sheffield and also had a London showroom. They ceased trading in 1958.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no significant loss to the gilding and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 145 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each salt is 6.4cm / 2.5ins by 4.7cm / 1.8ins and stands 2.8cm / 1.1ins high. The set of four together weighs in at a substantial 145.8g / 5.14oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the outside of the body of each salt, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter M for 1879, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the H A makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the salts.
