Victorian Silver Upright Chamberstick, B'ham, 1844

1 of 6
Here we have an exquisite Early Victorian Sterling Silver Upright Chamberstick for small taper candles complete with its original snuffer. The chamberstick has a domed eight panel base with engraved scroll decoration, a slender baluster stem with the finger ring handle and holder for the snuffer and an engraved hexagonal sconce with flared rim. The conical snuffer is also hexagonal with engraved decoration. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
This chamberstick may have been used when going to bed or more likely sat on a desk and used to light sealing wax.
The chamberstick was made in Birmingham by Joseph Willmore & Co and dates to 1844. Joseph Willmore was the grandson of Thomas Willmore, one of the original Birmingham silversmiths, and inherited his business in 1816. He is particularly well known for his very fine snuff boxes and vinaigrettes but also produced flatware and other items from around 1830 onwards. He remained in business until his death in 1855.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 180 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The chamberstick is 8.2cm / 3.2ins high and 5cm / 1.9ins in diameter across the base. It weighs in at 25.4g / 0.89oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the rim of the base, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. There is a second full set on the side of the snuffer. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter U for 1844, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the distinctive J W in a scalloped oval makers' mark for Joseph Willmore & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £11.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the chamberstick.
