2 x Art Deco Silver Candlesticks, Birmingham, 1929

Here we have a very stylish Pair of Art Deco Sterling Silver Pillar Candlesticks from the 1920s. The candlesticks have square domed bases, weighted for stability, octagonal stems and doric style sconces. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The candlesticks were made in Birmingham by A.L. Davenport and date to 1929, when Art Deco was really becoming the mainstream style. This Birmingham firm was founded in the 1920s by James Davenport who used his father's initials for the company name. They produced a wide range of Sterling Silver and electroplate. In 1932 they purchased the long established Birmingham firm T. Wilkinson & Sons and acquired the rights to their Pelican Plate trademark. James was succeeded by his son Eric Davenport and the firm finally ceased trading in 1971.
Condition is good, with a few little dings in the stems and bases and some slight creasing around the sconces where a previous owner has been a little vigorous whilst removing the candle stubs. They are still very eyecatching after nearly 100 years of good service! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each candlestick is 22.9cm / 9ins high and the bases are 8.8cm / 3.5ins square. The pair together weigh in at a hefty 937g / 33oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the bases.
The hallmarks, on the side rims of the bases, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter E for 1929 and the A L D makers'mark for A.L. Davenport.
Shipping in the UK is £18.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which covers the weght and value of the candlesticks.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
