Victorian Silver Chamberstick, Gsmiths & Ssmiths Victorian 1890s Silver %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have a superb quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Chamberstick with integral Vesta Case. The base is pear shaped and stands on three triangular feet with the vesta case accessed by a lid at the front revealing the strike on its underside. It has a curled circular handle. The sconce is urn shaped with a broad spreading rim and has a hole near the bottom for aiding the removal of candle stubs.

The chamberstick was made in London by the renowned Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co and dates to 1899. Founded in 1880 by William Gibson and John Langman, The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company occupied a famous showroom at 112 Regent Street where they served a high end clientele with goods of the very finest quality. They manufactured at Clerkenwell in London and the Regent Works in Sheffield. In 1952 they amalgamated with Garrard & Co.

Condition is very good with just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 125 years of good service. Unfortunately at some point in time it has lost its snuffer which would have stood on a small post near the handle. The hinge on the vesta case works smoothly and the lid shuts flush to the body. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The chamberstick is 17cm / 6.7ins from front to handle, 10.4cm / 4.1ins across at its widest point and stands 7.6cm / 3ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 236.4g / 8.34oz / 7.60toz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter d for 1899 and the W G over J L makers' mark for William Gibson and John Langman of The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co.

Shipping in the UK is £13.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the chamberstick.
