Modernist Silver Candle Holder, Elkington, 1968
Here we have an elegant Modernist Sterling Silver Two Sconce Candle Holder from the 1960s. The weighted base is circular with a central stepped cone rising from it. The two sconces are set asymmetrically on a curving bar so that one sits higher than the other.
The candle holder was made in Birmingham by famous silversmiths Elkington & Co and dates to 1968. Elkington & Co are one of the great names of English silverware. Founded by George Elkington in 1836, they took out the world's first silver electroplating patent in 1838 and this is what they are best known for. However they always continued to produce very high quality Sterling Silver alongside their silver plate. The company was merged into British Silverware with Walker & Hall and Mappin & Webb in 1963.
Condition is very good with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect from use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The candle holder stands 12.5cm / 4.9ins high, is 11cm / 4.3ins across and the base is 8cm / 3.1ins in diameter. It weighs in at 189.5g / 6.7oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.
The hallmarks, on the side of the bottom rim, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter T for 1968 and the distinctive E & Co makers' mark for Elkington & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the candle holder.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
