Pair of Tall Mid-Century Silver Candlesticks, 1955
Here we have a fine quality, elegant Pair of Tall Mid-Century Sterling Silver Candlesticks. The candlesticks have circular stepped bases, which are weighted for stability, tapering octagonal stems and urn shaped sconces.
The candlesticks were made in Birmingham by silversmith Bert Gordon and date to 1955. Bert Gordon registered his mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1923 and established his firm at premises in Northampton Street, later moving to Warstone Street, both in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. The company made a range of household silverware including napkin rings, bowls, candlesticks, jugs and other tableware. They remained in business into the 1980s.
Overall condition is very good with just a couple of small dings plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
These are candlesticks of a substantial size, standing 30.5cm / 12ins high and measuring 12.4cm / 4.9ins in diameter across the bases. The pair together weigh in at 1.39kg / 49oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the bases.
The hallmarks, on the upper sides of the bases, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter F for 1955 and the B G makers' mark for Bert Gordon.
Shipping in the UK is £16 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which covers the weight and the value of the candlesticks.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
