Pair of Victorian Silver Pillar Candlesticks, 1884
Here we have a very fine quality pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Pillar Candlesticks. The candlesticks have square bases, which are weighted for stability and covered with green baize to avoid scratching. The central pillars are circular with wrythen decoration down their full length and the drip trays are removable for ease of cleaning.
The candlesticks were made in London by Martin, Hall & Co and date to 1884. The firm was founded by Richard Martin and brothers Ebenezer & Joshua Hall in 1854 as the successor to Roberts & Hall, in which Ebenezer had been a partner. The company manufactured in Sheffield and London and had showrooms in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sydney, Australia. They participated in many international exhibitions and won a number of awards. The firm went into decline with the economic downturn of the 1930s and had ceased trading by 1936.
Condition is very good, with just a slight dip in the top rim on one pillar, largely disguised by the drip tray, plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 135 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each candlestick stands 13.5cm / 5.3ins high and the bases are 8.3cm / 3.2ins square. The pair together weigh in at a very substantial 635.3g / 22.41oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the bases.
The hallmarks, on the side rims of the bases and down the sides of the drip trays, are a little rubbed but still nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter I for 1884, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the RM over EH in a diamond makers' mark for Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall of Martin, Hall & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the candlesticks.
