Victorian Silver Teapot, James Dixon, Sheffield , 1891
Here we have a good quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Teapot. The teapot is basically oval with a part reeded body and attractive engraved floral and scalloped decoration around the upper body and on the top surface and the lid. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The teapot is made in Sheffield by famous silversmiths James Dixon & Sons and dates to 1891. With a history dating back to around 1806 when it was a partnership between James Dixon and Thomas Smith, James Dixon & Sons was one of Sheffield's foremost silversmiths and electroplaters, particularly noted for their relationship with designer Dr Chrsitopher Dresser whose groundbreaking silver plate teapot designs for the company are still being reproduced today. They were highly successful and remained in business up until the mid 1980s when they were absorbed into British Silverware.
Condition is generally good with just a very slight bruise to the upper rim on one side. There is however an old crack in the handle but this has been successfully repaired and the handle is completely solid and safe to use. The teapot has been priced to reflect this. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teapot measures 23.6cm / 9.3ins from spout to handle, 10cm / 3.9ins across the body and stands 14.4cm / 5.7ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 470g / 16.58oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter Y for 1891 and the J D & S makers' mark for James Dixon & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the teapot.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
