This is an early Victorian Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the traditional Fiddle Pattern. The spoon has the initial P in Old English style engraved at the top of the stem.
The salt spoon is made in Exeter by silversmith John Stone and dates to 1847. John Stone was one of Exeter's foremost silversmiths. He was a specialist spoon maker working from premises initially in New Bridge Street and later the High Street between the early 1820s and his death in 1868. He was succeeded in the business by his son Thomas Hart Stone who in turn was followed by his widow Frances Stone.
The spoon has certainly seen some use and there is quite a bit of surface scratching, possibly through abrasive cleaning, but there are no dings or dents and no salt corrosion. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 9.3cm / 3.6ins long and weighs in at 7.7g / 0.27oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the Gothic date letter L for 1847, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J.S makers' mark for John Stone.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
