Pair of Victorian Silver Salt Spoons, Exeter, 1849

This is a high quality Pair of Early Victorian Sterling Silver Salt Spoons in the traditional Fiddle Pattern. The bowls of the spoons are gilded and the initials S J H are elegantly engraved at the tops of the stems.
The salt spoons were made in Exeter by silversmith John Stone and date to 1849. John Stone was one of Exeter's foremost silversmiths. He was a specialist spoon maker working from premises initially in New Bridge Street and later the High Street between the early 1820s and his death in 1868. He was succeeded in the business by his son Thomas Hart Stone who registered his own mark in 1863 and after his death in 1873 was in turn followed by his widow Frances Stone.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 175 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 9.8cm / 3.85ins long and the pair together weigh in at a respectable 18.4g / 0.65oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter N for 1849, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J S makers' mark for John Stone.
