Victorian Silver Chamberstick, Grey & Co, 1898

Here we have a charming late Victorian Sterling Silver Chamberstick. The chamberstick is heart shaped with a crimped rim and a heart shaped thumb rest on top of the finger ring handle. The urn shaped sconce has a removable nozzle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. This was probably originally intended for a lady's desk or dressing table.
The chamberstick was made in London by Grey & Co and dates to 1898. Grey & Co registered their mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1893. They produced small novelty items of tableware, elegant card cases, desk items and other small silver pieces. They had a fairly short existence, closing down around 1905.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs. The candle is for display purposes only and is not included with the chamberstick.
The chamberstick measures 11.7cm / 4.6ins from back to tip, 8.8cm / 3.4ins across and stands 3.3cm / 1.3ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 63.5g / 2.24oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper side of the tray and down the side of the nozzle, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter c for 1898 and the Gy & Co makers' mark for Grey & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the chamberstick.
Overseas customers, please ask us abnout shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
