Victorian Silver Candle Snuffer, Birmingham, 1895
Here we have an unusual late Victorian Sterling Silver Candle Snuffer. The snuffer consists of a long pin with a ring handle, at the pointed end of which is a domed cap for extinguishing the candle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The snuffer was made in Birmingham by the renowned silversmiths Deakin & Francis and dates to 1895. Deakin & Francis have a proud history as silversmiths and jewellers dating back to 1786. The firm is still run by members of the Deakin family today. They are England's oldest manufacturing jewellers and still working from the same building that they started in back in the 18th century.
Condition is very good, with just a small, shallow flat spot on the upper part of the dome plus the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The snuffer is 16cm / 6.3ins long and 2.4cm / 0.94ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 18.7g / 0.66oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the dome of the snuffer, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic letter v for 1895 and the D & F makers' mark for Deakin & Francis.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
