Pair George III Scottish Silver Toddy Ladles, 1808
This is a top quality pair of George III Scottish Sterling Silver Toddy Ladles in the Oar pattern, a Scottish variation on the traditional Fiddle pattern. The ladles are made in Edinburgh by Alexander Edmonstoun III and date to 1808. Alexander Edmonstoun was principally a spoon maker, although some other pieces are known by him. He was the son (and presumably grandson) of Edinburgh silver spoon makers and was working in the city between 1807 and 1851, so these ladles are early pieces by him.
When the fiddle pattern first appeared in Scotland, around the time these ladles were made, it was produced without shoulders just above the bowl and these pieces are referred to as Oar pattern.
These are well made ladles in a good gauge of silver. They bear a crest of an eagle with the motto "IN ALTUM" (Latin for "into the deep") engraved at the top of the stem. This combination is for the Scottish branch of the Alston family.
Condition of the ladles is good with no dings or dents and just a very slight misshaping of the bowl on one ladle and only the most superficial of surface wear. All in all they are remarkable survivors of around 212 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The ladles are each 17cm / 6.75" long and the pair together weighs a very substantial 78.0g / 2.75oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stems, are well struck and incredibly clear to read after over 200 years. They show the thistle for Scottish Sterling Silver, the three towered castle assay mark for Edinburgh, the date letter "c" for 1808, the George III duty mark and the AE makers' mark for Alexander Edmonstoun III.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the ladles.
