Pair Edwardian Fancy Back Silver Teaspoons, 1901

This is a high quality pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver "Fancy Back" teaspoons in the traditional Hanoverian pattern. The spoons are made in a heavy gauge of silver by Thomas Bradbury & Sons and assayed in London in 1901, although they would almost certainly have been made at Thomas Bradbury's works in Sheffield. They seem to have used the Sheffield assay office for their everyday items and sent their more upmarket items to London for assay as this was considered to add a touch of class.
"Fancy Back" spoons were first produced in the 1730s but went out of fashion later in the 18th century when spoons began to be set on the table with bowls upwards. They were produced in small numbers in the Edwardian era as part of the "Georgian Revival" and these fall into that category. They are in the Hanoverian pattern with upturned finials. The pattern on the back of the bowl is a shell heel with floral decoration below.
The spoons have had some use but are in good overall condition with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear you would expect after nearly 120 years! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoons are each 12.3cm long and the pair together weigh a very substantial 35.8g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read with the exception of the makers' marks which are a little rubbed but still clear to decipher. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "f" for 1901 and the TB makers' mark for Thomas Bradbury & Sons.
