Mid-Century Silver Compact, Crisford & Norris 1959
This is a top quality Mid-Century Sterling Silver Powder Compact with its original pouch. The compact has engine turned decoration on both the front and back of the case and the rectangular cartouche on the front is blank.
On opening you have the circular mirror on the inside of the lid and a silver cover over the powder compartment. This is in turn opened by a sliding catch to reveal the powder compartment with its original mesh cover and powder puff.
The compact is made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Crisford & Norris and dates to 1959. Crisford & Norris were founded in 1896 and remained in business until the late 1970s. They are best known for their small items for personal use and produced very fine quality compacts.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents in the silver. The mirror gives a true, clear reflection and the inside in particular is in beautiful condition. It doesn't look as though it has seen a great deal of use. The hinge and catch are in full working order. The pouch has seen better days but is still serviceable and has done a good job of protecting the compact. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The compact is 7cm / 2.8ins square and weighs in, without the pouch, at 105.7g / 3.7oz, which does of course include the built in mirror.
The compact is hallmarked throughout with the lion passant stamp for Sterling Silver on the rims, the cover of the powder compartment and even the catch. The full set of hallmarks is on the base of the powder compartment and shows the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter K for 1959 and the C & N makers' mark for Crisford & Norris.
