Victorian Silver Belt Buckle, Chester, 1897
This is an elegant, heavyweight late Victorian Sterling Silver Two Part Belt Buckle. The buckle has a pierced design of acanthus leaves and flowers. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The buckle was made by silversmiths Nathan & Hayes and assayed in Chester in 1897. George Nathan and Ridley Hayes began their partnership in Birmingham in the late 1880s. They are particularly known for their good quality silver tableware, which they primarily assayed in Birmingham, and more personal items such as buckles, buttons and dressing table jars, which they mostly assayed in Chester. They remained in business up until around 1920.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 125 years of use. Each half of the buckle has some small loops on the back for attaching the fabric of the belt and one of these has broken off. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The buckle is 12.9cm / 5ins wide and 5.5cm / 2.1ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 84.1g / 2.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the front rim of the buckle, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter O for 1897 and the N & H makers' mark for Nathan & Hayes.
