Mid-Century Silver Jewellery Box, Adie Bros, 1958
This is an attractive Mid-Century Sterling Silver Jewellery Box. The box is oval in shape and stands on four rolled feet. The lid has engine turned stripes surrounding a blank cartouche and a scalloped rim. The inside of the lid is gilded and the body has a red velvet lining.
The jewellery box was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Adie Brothers and dates to 1958. The firm was founded in 1906 when two established Birmingham silversmiths, McKewan & Adie and E.S. Barnsley & Co, were merged under the leadership of Percy Adie to form Adie Brothers Ltd. The company was very successful and produced a wide range of silverware until the 1960s when they were absorbed into British Silverware.
Condition is good, with just the superficial surface wear and a few tiny dings that you would anticipate with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jewellery box is 9.7cm / 3.8ins by 7.7cm / 3ins and stands 4cm / 1.6ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 136.3g / 4.8oz with just a very small amount of this being made up of the lining.
The hallmarks, on the underside rim, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter J for 1958 and the distinctive A Bros Ltd makers' mark for Adie Brothers Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
