Here we have a stunning large George V Cut Glass Inkwell with a Sterling Silver Collar and Lid, which also incorporates a pen rest. The inkwell is a really substantial solid cube of glass with a hobnail cut base and chamfered edges. The inkwell is sunk into the middle of this and mounted with the plain silver collar and hinged lid and pen rest. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The inkwell was made for the famous retailer Finnigans of Manchester and assayed in Birmingham in 1912. Finnigans was established by Brian Finnigan in Manchester in 1830. They became famous for their luxury luggage and steamer trunks for which they were awarded a gold medal at the Great Exhibition in 1851, which enhanced their reputation even further. They opened a store in London’s New Bond Street in 1879 and enlarged their range to include travel accessories, antique clocks, watches and silverware and later still they moved into fashion, sportswear and beauty products. They ceased trading in 1988.

Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks in the glass and just the superficial surface wear to the silver that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. The lid sits at a very slight angle on the collar but the hinge is in good working order and a pen sits safely on the pen rest. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The inkwell is 10cm / 3.9ins square and stands 8.4cm / 3.3ins high. It weighs in at 1.83kg / 64.5oz.

The hallmarks on the side of the collar are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter n for 1912 and the Fs Ld makers' mark for Finnigans Ltd. There is a partial set on the inside of the lid showing the lion passant and the date letter and the underside of the pen rest is stamped FINNIGANS LD MANCHESTER. The collar is also stamped with the registered design number 536861, which dates the original design to 1909.
