Edwardian Silver & Glass Stamp Roller, B'ham, 1909

Here we have a good quality Edwardian Sterling Silver and Glass Stamp Roller. The circular stand has a glass bath inset within it which would hold a small amount of water. The outside of the stand is cased in silver and it is weighted for stability. The glass roller sits in two sockets at the top of the bath and as you rolled your stamp across it, it would moisten the back for sticking on an envelope.
The stamp roller was made in Birmingham by Henry Clifford Davis and dates to 1909. Founded in 1901 in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, Henry Clifford Davis produced a wide range of silverware from small personal items such as manicure sets, desk items and sewing kits up to large tea and coffee sets, candlesticks and candelabra. They became H.C. Davis Ltd in the early 1930s and remained in business into the 1960s.
Condition is good, with just a couple of tiny nibbles on the sprogs at either side of the roller and one small nick in the top rim of the silver case, plus the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 115 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The stamp roller is 5.6cm / 2.2ins in diameter and 3.6cm / 1.4ins high. It weighs 144.7g / 5.1oz.
The hallmarks, on the outside of the body, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter k for 1909 and the H C D makers' mark for Henry Clifford Davis.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the stamp roller.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
