Georgian Berry Spoon Peter & William Bateman
Arthur Vandyk Antiques are delighted to present for sale this superb quality Georgian Old English pattern berry spoon by the world renowned Bateman family of silversmiths namely Peter and William Bateman. The spoon has a beautiful floral pattern along the stem and is in superb condition, a fine piece of tableware that would look excellent in the home on display or would make the perfect gift for a loved one, an ideal starter piece for a burgeoning silver collector or a nice addition to any silver collection. The Berry pattern was likely to be added later as was the fashion in the nineteenth century.
History of the Bateman Family
Hester Bateman (1709-1794) handed over the family silversmithing business to her two sons Jonathan and Peter in 1790. Jonathan was married to Ann (1748-1813). When Jonathan died of cancer in 1791, he left his share to his widow Ann. Ann and her brother-in-law Peter entered their partnership mark in 1791. In 1800 Ann's son William (I), then joined the firm. Ann retired in 1805, leaving William and his uncle Peter, to continue the family business. This spoon is thus made by Hester Bateman's grandson, William and her son Peter in the year 1806.
