George V Silver Mounted Powder Bowl, London, 1927
This is an attractive George V Cut Glass Powder Bowl with a Sterling Silver Rim. The glass body of the powder bowl has thumb and star cut decoration and a star cut base. The lid has complimentary thumb and star cut decoration around the top, a star cut handle and a deep Sterling Silver rim which is plain.
The powder bowl was made in London by the silversmith Walter Gardener Groves and dates to 1927. Walter Groves founded his firm in 1909 and specialised in silver mounted glassware such as perfume bottles, powder bowls, vases, dressing table sets and magnifying glasses. They remained in business until around the mid-1930s.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass and just a couple of dents in the underside of the silver rim, which are not visible when the lid is in place. There is of course the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 95 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The powder bowl is 10.3cm / 4ins in diameter and 8.2cm / 3.2ins high. It weighs in at 397g / 14oz.
The hallmarks on the Sterling Silver rim are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter m for 1927 and the W.G in conjoined circles makers' mark for Walter Gardener Groves.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
