Very small pocket or purse 19thC style vinaigrette Vinaigrette perfume scent
A very small vinaigrette, made from cut glass with a white metal lid and grille - see the images. Its a curio in that the outside of the lid seems to be silver, but any marks have long gone, while inside the grille just doesn't have the feel of silver, so I'm going to suggest it is silver plated on the outside.
The lid is very secure so I have not been over-enthusiastic and tried to remove it, but inside the glass sits what I presume to be a sponge ready to be reloaded with your choice of perfume (there is no discernible smell now) so you can walk through fields of swine or freshly manured pastures with impunity. An ideal extra for Glastonbury perhaps. Or maybe that would require smelling salts, rather than a scent.
A charming little piece and were it silver it would surely be dated for the be early 19thC, But as it is I suspect it is more likely to be late 19thC VIctorian or even early 20thC, perhaps Edwardian?
