Victorian Silver Trinket Box, London Import, 1895
This is a charming late Victorian Sterling Silver Trinket Box. The box is circular with a hinged lid and gilt interior. The exterior is decorated with embossed images of putti performing various activities in a landscape featuring trees, a house, a lake and a castle.
The trinket box is continental in origin and was imported into the UK by Eustace George Parker and assayed in London in 1895. Parker was based in Altricham in Cheshire and specialised in importing continental silver tableware and novelties for sale in the UK. He had marks registered in Chester and London and was active throughout the 1890s.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of tiny dings in the lid plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The trinket box is 4.6cm / 1.8ins in diameter and stands 2.5cm / 0.98ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 42.8g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inner rim of the box, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter U for 1895, the letter F for foreign to show that it's an import and the E G P importers' mark for Eustace George Parker. There is a secondary partial set on the rim of the lid. The underside of the base has two stamps from the country of origin, one of a bird and the other the letters CoI but we have not been able to identify these as yet.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
