George V Silver Jewellery Box, Birmingham, 1916
Here we have a luxurious George V Sterling Silver Jewellery Box from the time of the First World War. The box has a hinged lid with engine turned stripes and a blank central cartouche, making it ideal as a gift item. It stands on three fleur-de-lys feet. The inside is lined with dark green velvet and the underside of the lid is gilded for that extra special finish.
The antique jewellery box is made in Birmingham by Saunders & Shepherd and dates to 1916. Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders and James Francis (Frank) Hollings Shepherd founded their partnership in London in the 1860s. They were both a manufacturing silversmith and a high end retailer with a showroom in Holborn Circus. They remained in business up until around 1930.
Condition of the Jewellery Box is very good with no dings or dents and only the superficial surface wear to the silver that has to be expected after over 100 years of use. The thin leather covering on the underside of the interior is rather worn but the velvet interior is in very good condition as is the gold plating on the inside of the lid. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box is 6cm / 2.25ins in diameter and 4cm / 1.6ins high. It weighs 69.2g / 2.4oz but this does include the velvet lined interior.
The hallmarks on the underside of the box are nice and easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter r for 1916 and the CS.FS makers mark for Cornelius Saunders & Frank Shepherd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the jewellery box.
Overseas customers please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
