George III Silver Spice Ladle, Hester Bateman 1784
This is an attractive George III Sterling Silver Spice Ladle in the Old English Beaded pattern. The initials R J are elegantly engraved in 18th century style at the top of the stem.
The spice ladle was made in London by the remarkable Hester Bateman and dates to 1784. The Bateman Family dominated silver production in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly in flatware. The business was driven by Hester Bateman who after being widowed in 1760 turned her husband’s insignificant silver firm into a hugely successful company. Items with Hester Bateman's mark are much sought after by collectors.
Condition is fair with just a couple of tiny dings in the bowl and a slight kink in the stem plus the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after 240 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spice ladle is 9cm / 3.5ins long and 2.8cm / 1.1ins across the bowl. It weighs in at 7.9g / 0.28oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter II for 1784, the George III duty mark and the distinctive H B makers' mark for Hester Bateman.
