George III Silver Salt Spoon, Joseph Hicks, Exeter George III Georgian Silver %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a well made George III Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The spoon was made in Exeter by silversmith Joseph Hicks and dates to between 1786 and around 1800. After this all salt spoons carried a date letter. Joseph Hicks was a specialist spoon maker who was active in Exeter between around 1780 and 1835. Although his principal output was spoons and flatware his mark does occasionally show up on other items although these are very rare.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 220 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt spoon is 9.4cm / 3.7ins long and weighs in at 7.5g / 0.26oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the George III duty mark introduced in 1786 and the J H makers' mark for Joseph Hicks of Exeter.
