Victorian Silver Salt Spoon, Exeter, 1866

This is a good quality heavy Victorian Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the Fiddle and Thread pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The salt spoon was made by James & Josiah Williams of Bristol and assayed in Exeter in 1866. Josiah Williams & Co of Bristol were a hugely successful firm of silversmiths, the biggest in England outside of London, Birmingham and Sheffield. They traced their history back to Robert Williams succeeding to the business of William Woodman in around 1838. The firm passed through several generations of the Williams family becoming Josiah Williams & Co in 1879. Later partners included George Jackson and David Fullerton before they became a limited company in 1925. They finally ceased trading around 1940.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 155 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt spoon is 10.9cm / 4.3ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 21.3g / 0.75oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter K for 1866, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JW & JW makers' mark for James & Josiah Williams.
