George III Silver Cream Jug, William Skeen, 1761
Here we have a fine quality early George III Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The jug is pear shaped with a drop bottom on a low pedestal stem with a gadrooned rim and foot and a scroll handle. This design is absolute typical of the 1760s. The front of the jug has a crest of a deer neatly engraved on it and the underside of the base bears the initials W.H.
The cream jug is made in London by William Skeen and dates to 1761, the first full year of the long reign of King George III. William Skeen first registered his mark in 1755 and remained active until at least the mid 1780s. Most surviving examples of his work are cream jugs and sauce boats, so he seems to have specialised in these items.
Condition is very good with just a couple of very shallow dents to the body, which is forgivable after over 260 years of good service! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 9cm / 3.5ins from lip to handle, 6cm / 2.4ins across and stands 11.7cm / 4.6ins high. It weighs a substantial 124g / 4.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the front of the jug above the crest are a little rubbed but still easy to make out. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter F for 1761 and the W S makers' mark for William Skeen.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the jug.
