This is an elegant George III Sterling Silver Caddy Spoon. The spoon has an oval shaped bowl with pinprick engraved swag decoration. The curving stem has bright cut decoration and the initials R A S are engraved in the cartouche at the top.

The caddy spoon was made in London by silversmith George Burrows Snr and dates to 1794. George Burrows Snr registered his first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1769. His mark is most often seen on spoons and flatware but he also made some fine tableware. After his death in 1801, his wife Alice continued the business in partnership with their son, George Burrows Jnr, until her death in 1819, after which George Jnr continued in business by himself into the mid-1820s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 230 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 7.1cm / 2.8ins long and 4.2cm / 1.6ins wide across the bowl. It weighs in at 9.7g / 0.34oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter t for 1794, the George III duty mark and the G B makers' mark for George Burrows Snr.
